The Video Music Awards are famously unpredictable. You never know who is going to do what and everyone watching is waiting to be shocked.

Here are some of this year’s surprises:

Katy Perry Relived the 90’s in Her Denim Dress – Katy Perry has admitted that it was nostalgia that drove her and her partner for the evening, Riff Raff, to wear their all denim ensembles, reminiscent of the days of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.

Pharrell Didn’t Win Anything – This year was the year of Pharrell. His video “Happy” was actually everywhere this year. It even inspired thousands of people around the world to dance around the street and make their own versions. How did he go home empty-handed this year? He was nominated for “Video of the Year” and “Best Male Video”.

Miley Cyrus Gave Up Her Stage Time – Last year after Miley Cyrus twerked her way to infamy, many claimed Miley was desperate for attention. This year, Miley Cyrus won the coveted award of “Video of the Year” and instead of soaking up the limelight, she helped promote a great cause. Miley sat on the sideline and sent up a homeless youth as a representative of the organization My Friend’s Place.

Beyoncé Can Keep A Secret

Aside from being one of the biggest names in pop music, the wife of Jay Z and mother to Blue Ivy;  Beyoncé has something else going for her, Queen Bey can keep a secret. Midnight on Friday a surprising release from Mrs. Carter appeared online.

With no warning, not a single piece of promotion and absolutely no leaks, Beyoncé released what she has referred to as a “visual album”. Not only did she release 14 new songs, but each song has a unique video.

With multiple collaborators and all that goes along with recording the songs and making the videos, not a single person let it slip about the release. The album features artists like Drake, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, as well as Bey’s family; Jay Z and Blue Ivy.

The album is terrific and nothing less than to be expected from the super star. While the industry becomes more and more focused on singles, releasing her entire album without promotion was an interesting move, but if anyone in the world can pull off the move it would have to be Beyoncé.

Beyoncé released a video explaining her choice to release the “visual album”. You can hear what she had to  say about it, including her inspiration from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”, in the video below.

If you are worried about the success of the self titled album, fear not; word spread like wildfire after its release and it is already topping the charts for downloaded music.

Dancing for us

Posted by DJ • December 01, 2011 at 09:36 AM

Beyonce is getting all, like, Film Noir on us with this 50’s style black & white new video. Although it’s pretty safe to say that back in the 50’s, nobody really danced the way Beyonce does here, and that even if they did, they would have probably been hospitalized in a mental institution. We’ve come a long way, haven’t we?  Anyway, Dance For You is a new track that appears on the Deluxe edition of her latest album, 4, which just came out this week. Get it on iMesh.

We have lift off!

A new Beyonce video is always a good reason for a party, let alone a new post on our blog.  This is Countdown, a dazzling combination of styles and sounds and proof that pop in 2011 can still be fun, challenging, full of surprises and yet insanely catchy.

And don’t forget, her album 4 is still available for download on iMesh

The empire strikes back

The first single from Beyoncé’s new album was a somewhat disputable choice. The new track, however, Best Thing I Never Had, is a classic Beyoncé – soulful yet contemporary, women- empowering yet sensitive and smart, and her majesty is firing on all of her vocal cylinders. And as if that’s not enough, the video features Beyoncé wearing a lingerie outfit and a princess Leia hairdo.

She’s irreplacable

Oh yes, the queen is back. With all due respect to the Gagas, Rihannas and Britneys, there is only one Beyonce. The former child of destiny is gearing up towards a new album and returns with a new single, Run the World (Girls). Hear it right here and let us know what you think.

The new song is actually based on Pon Di Floor, the big dancehall tune by Major Lazer – the UK producer Switch and  his US associate, globe trotting DJ Diplo.
